Totes for food & beverage
The sector where paperwork matters more than appearance. An auditor will not look at your bottle — they will ask for the prior-contents declaration, the wash record and the test certificate.
Quote food-grade or rebottled stock
Name the product and whether you have audit exposure. Documentation ships as standard either way.
Tell us what you have.
We will tell you what it is worth.
Buying, selling, washing, hauling or recycling — one form covers all of it. Replies come from a specialist in York, PA, by email, inside one business day.
Prefer plain email? Write to info@ibctotesreco.com — include your ZIP, quantity and what the totes last held.
Food and beverage buyers should be choosing between rebottled (virgin contact surface, no prior-contents question, roughly 55–65% of new cost) and documented food-grade reconditioned (edible prior service, dedicated wash line, 100% hydrostatic test, roughly 35–45%). Hot fill above about 140°F and any validated CIP requirement means stainless instead.
What an auditor actually asks for
In seventeen years of supplying food manufacturers we have never seen an auditor examine a bottle's interior. What they ask for is a chain of records, and the question is always the same: how do you know?
- What did this container previously hold, and who says so?
- How was it cleaned, at what temperature, with what chemistry, for how long?
- How do you know the cleaning chemistry is gone?
- Was it pressure tested, and is there a record against this serial?
- Are the gaskets and seals compliant for food contact, and can you prove it?
- What is your changeover procedure between products and allergen classes?
We answer one to five on every food-grade and rebottled order as standard. Question six is yours, and it is the one that most often produces findings — document your changeover before you need to.
Where the sector gets caught out
Allergen changeover without a record. Running a dairy intermediate and then a nut-free product in the same container, cleaned in-house with no documented parameters. The cleaning may well have been adequate; the absence of a record is the finding.
Assuming “food grade” is a certificate. It is a status that depends on materials, history and handling. A resin compliance certificate says nothing about what the bottle held last month. The distinction, in full.
Hot filling poly. Above roughly 140°F the bottle softens, deforms and then draws in as it cools. Every season we take in a handful of bottles destroyed exactly this way.
Solid lids on a pumped discharge. A transfer pump on a sealed container collapses a wall panel. Use a vented lid for anything drawn down.
Buying new when rebottled would pass. The most expensive mistake in the sector, and the easiest to fix.

Food & beverage FAQ
Can a used IBC tote pass a food safety audit?
Yes, if the documentation exists. Auditors do not inspect bottles — they inspect records. A rebottled unit passes most easily because the contact surface is virgin and there is no prior-contents question at all. A food-grade reconditioned unit passes when you can produce the signed prior-contents declaration, the wash programme record, the rinse verification, the hydrostatic test certificate and the elastomer compliance references. We ship all five as standard.
Rebottled or food-grade reconditioned — which should a food plant buy?
Rebottled, if there is any audit exposure or the product is light-coloured and clarity matters. Food-grade reconditioned, if your prior-service options are good, the product is forgiving and the price difference matters at volume. Our own order book runs roughly 60/40 in favour of rebottled and the ratio has been rising for five years.
Can I hot-fill into a poly IBC?
Up to about 120–140°F with care, and not above it. HDPE loses stiffness as it warms and a hot-filled bottle can deform under its own head pressure, then pull a partial vacuum as it cools and draw the walls in. If your process genuinely needs hot fill, use stainless — it is also the only option that supports a validated clean-in-place cycle.
What about cleaning between products?
For a dedicated single-product container, a hot detergent rinse between fills is usually sufficient. For a container changing products — particularly changing allergen status — you want a documented wash on our food line with rinse verification, not an in-house hose-down. Allergen changeover without a record is the easiest audit finding there is.
Do you supply totes for spent grain and brewery by-product?
Yes, and it is one of the best Grade B applications there is. Spent grain slurry is messy but benign, so you do not need food-grade stock for a by-product leaving the site — Grade B with a 3-inch outlet moves it far more easily than a 2-inch, because grain slurry is thick.

What a food plant is actually buying
A chain of records. In seventeen years of supplying food manufacturers we have never seen an auditor examine a container's interior, and we have never seen one accept “we washed it thoroughly” in place of provenance.
Which is why our order book has shifted from roughly 70/30 in favour of documented food-grade reconditioned in 2018 to about 40/60 in favour of rebottled today. Customers increasingly prefer to remove the question rather than trust somebody else's answer to it.
